Recently, an application has been popping up across Facebook and other social networking sites, giving those who choose to entertain the release of their ‘basic information’ the chance to measure up to a tick box exercise of foods they have consumed from a list that by its title seems to think they should really have given a go… the list is below:
As someone who considers themselves fairly erudite in gastronomic terms, this is rather an unusual list for someone to state that they by insinuation are foods that should be eaten in a person’s lifetime before expiration. I say unusual, as to call it anything more derogatory would be unbalanced in that it is really is down to an opinion, no matter how much it clashes with my own. Bugger it, let’s face it, that list is bollocks. I managed to score an 84 on there (although on revision it is 86, some things I have had but just under a different name –frito pie for example is something we get done in places over here as ‘nachos’ just corn chips with soured cream, cheese, chilli sauce, jalapenos etc), however a lot of the stuff (for example S’mores, Pocky and MoonPie) are just snack foods (a MoonPie is rather like a Wagon Wheel for us in the UK), where others are just plain nonsense processed or fast food such as Spam, chicken and waffles and biscuits and gravy. I’ve been through the list a few times and can’t believe some of the nonsense that is in there ahead of the likes of Chorizo, Lomo, Cheddar Cheese, Melton Mowbray Pork Pies, Cornish Pasties, Champagne, Dry Somerset Cider, Foule Muddamas, Pork Crackling/Scratchings, German Helles Beer or Czech Pilsner, Langoustines, Tuna Steaks, Houmous, Thai Massaman Curry, British Sunday Roast/Christmas Dinner. My list could go on into four figures at least, but given some consideration; I may be pretty parochial in my very very quick list there, but I am sure with a bit of thought some readers could suggest foodstuffs that they can create an argument for in the comments section. This has been covered in some other blogs previously where the comment section has rapidly descended into a game of one up-manship or indignation from vegetarians for a list covering non-carnivorous delicacies, either is fine with me, but be aware that path is a never ending spiral and can get frankly, pretty dull. There has been another list going round for Cities and Countries that you’ve visited, but also for which beers from around the world that have been tried. I gave that a go too, but based on the rather US-centric list what I regard as important ales, lagers or brews have mostly not been given a slot on the list! Those missed off are countless important styles of German, Czech and Belgian beers, not to mention competent beers such as those from Mexico, Asia and other areas of Europe. The likes of Tiger, Pacifico, Asahi, Tsing Tao, German Kolschs and Helles lagers, a multitude of trappist and brown/blonde beers, not to mention some excellent British Ales…. all overlooked for some frankly appalling choices! Anyway, with this list I still think Chorizo should be in there for sure…. Langoustines too, Horse meat, Moules Mariniere and Bacon with Scallops…. Pedro.
